First off, I want to welcome you to my website, garymizar.com. Thank you for taking the time to look at some of my creations that I have displayed on these pages.
This section is labeled “About”, so I guess I had better get to discussing about the about, huh? HA!
I never have been one to go “about” tooting my own horn ( as some would say). But in the Real World people want to know a little bit about you and how all the accomplishments that you did execute and still continue to execute, came about.
To put it plainly, I have always had the ability to doodle and draw. In other words, it’s a God given ability. No other words to describe it. God Blessed me with the ability to just look at things and create something wonderful with it. Whether it be an automobile, an airplane, a bird or a barn, I could make it come to life. Granted, I was a little shaky in my beginning stages of drawing, but around my elementary school years things began to change for me. My attempts to make the artwork look a little more appealing began to have people taking notice. Gary Dean, they would say. Did you draw that? As to think, NAH, you didn’t draw that ! Yep, sure did. All by myself ! Isn’t it funny how people don’t want to accept that you have that kind of ability without some kind of schooling for it?
Now the fun part comes. And this is how it all became reality to me. In the early 60’s, Hot Rod’s and fast cars came on the scene with a vengeance. True, the 40’s and 50’s had their hay-day also with chopped up roadsters and low slung lead sleds. But in the 60’s, Custom Built cars from near nothing became “Eye Candy” for the teenagers of that period. Thus, people like Ed ”Big Daddy” Roth, George and Sam Barris, The Alexander Bros. and Carl Casper to name a few, drew kids to a new realm of EXCITABILITY ! PLASTIC MODELS AND AIRPLANE GLUE! They were flying off the shelves ! I too, became one of those kids that fell for the things of….Plastic Mastery ! But one thing that really got the kids going was Testors “Candy Apple“ Spray Paint Cans. We liked it. But the parents? That was a different story. Talk about the Smell that made people go BONKERS ! Gary Dean ! OH, NO. HERE WE GO AGAIN. What ARE YOU DOING in that BASEMENT ? Really, I am Blessed to be alive after breathing all that “Candy Apple” O-o-o-z !
Now, Models? They were cool and all that, but something else got my attention that would not let go ! Airbrushed “MONSTER” shirts ! WOO-HOO !!! This was the Anthem of all artwork (in my opinion, anyways). Ed Roth’s Monster Catalog made my world go upside down. This is it !!! I have got to have one of these and wear it to school and be all cool and stuff ! This was the beginnings of a New World for the boy who lived on 17th Street in Pueblo, Co.!
Well, indubitably, I wanted to take on this artistry of Airbrushing Shirts to share with the world. With a “Big Daddy” Monster Catalog in hand I could conquer the world ! But just one thing. I didn’t have an airbrush ! What to do, what to do!
With a lot of pestering and bantering my Dear Father, (LOVEYA’ POP) he grabbed me up and took me down to the paint store near our home and said, “What’s this Airbrush thing look like” ? And low and behold, Dad bought me and Airbrush. Talk about not being able to sleep for days ! Do you know I still have that Airbrush to this day. A Wren Model ”B” single action brush. What memories. I will never forget the day I showed him an airbrushed picture that I did of “Geronimo” on a piece of my Mom’s old sheets. Now MOMS, let them experiment ! You never know what those sheets may make him become. But anyways, Dad couldn’t believe his eyes. He was so proud of me and was just wearing people out showing them what I had created. My sister still has that picture to this day.
I know I have carried on a lot here with what I am sharing with you, but to put it all into a small story, through all that I had said about wanting to draw like Ed Roth and meet him one day, it all came to pass. In the mid-eighties I was introduced to “Big Daddy” at a car show in Brigham City, UT by a friend of mine, Steve Stanford.
Man, that’s a day I will never forget. From that day forward, I became one of his full time artists for the well know character “Rat Fink”. After working with Ed some 13+ years and drawing several hundred pieces of artwork, I got to experience things that I never, ever thought that I would get to see or do. It was truly a time in my life that changed the forces of time for me. Traveling, drawing, pin-striping with the Master of many talents was just beyond anything I would ever imagine or see.
I’ll close with this. Still to this day I carry on the tradition of making people smile and laugh at the drawings that I do to inspire or just bring back a moment in time that they would remember in their childhood. It’s a pleasure to bring my talents to the table for people to see and enjoy with the talent that the Good Lord has given me. It humbles me to know that I can do something with these talents and do the things that I do and LOVE what I do and make money with it! AMAZING for sure.
Remember…the WORDS that you SPEAK will soon come to pass. Good or Bad.
